Classically trained saxophonist, composer, and producer, Nicholas Kaleikini performs an intimate and freely expressive original composition representing his interpretation of “continuum”. In a deeply spiritual yet very tangible way, Kaleikini connects this performance to his personal, cultural, musical, and familial roots. This performance is dedicated to his grandfather Danny Kaleikini, the iconic and legendary singer, musician, showroom entertainer, actor and recording artist who was a living embodiment of the aloha spirit.

“My piece, entitled Dada (cont.), is a play on words between the theme continuum and my initial vision of a “continuation” of my musical journey. This project is notably a shift from years of releasing music and working with my grandfather (who I call Dada) to now composing and releasing music of my own. When I was introduced to this project, my vision was to have my Dada perform the nose flute (ʻohe hano ihu) alongside me playing the sax, a representation of the three albums and many performances we did together. After spending most of my musical career working with my Dada, I felt a transition to finally embark on my career, represented by me walking up the stairs and performing the composition I wrote at Shangri La. My Dada was admitted to the hospital not too long after being invited to the 8x8 exhibit so I took on his role by playing his nose flute, something I had never done before.”

Saxophonist Nicholas Kaleikini & pianist Ethan Capone perform "Smile" at Lana Lane Studios. Charlie Chaplin, who composed the song, was inspired by Puccini's Tosca. John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954.

A nod to where Kaleikini started and sustained a long lasting career as The Kahala's resident entertainer for 30 years. Garnering the title as, The Ambassador of Aloha, Danny Kaleikini has sung for US Presidents, English royalty, and countless visitors from around the world, sharing his love for the islands and it's culture. Danny Kaleikini has become a household name on the islands of Hawaii; a local mainstay and cornerstone of Hawaiian entertainment and music. Here he performs Frank Sinatra's signature melody, My Way, written by Paul Anka.
